TRESNJEVKA is a womens organisation in Zagreb that assists women refugees from the Bosnia-Herzegovina war.
The United Nations has acknowledged the existence of more than 60 rape-death camps where the sexual torture of women has been carried out. Survivors of the camps are in need of food, clothing, medical care and shelter.
Earlier this year, Tresnjevka approached the Australian aid organisation, Austcare, for assistance. Dr Robyn Groves and the author Blanche D'Alpuget travelled to Zagreb in May 1993 as Austcare representatives to determine how best to assist the refugees.
As a result of this visit a women's centre will be established to provide emergency shelter and a medical facility offering gynaecological services and counselling for women rape victims.
Austcare also identified an immediate need for clothing and women's hygiene products. Donations of basic necessities such as soap, shampoo, toothpaste and sanitary pads can be made at any state Austcare office.
Blanche D'Alpuget will be the guest speaker at a fundraising dinner on Wednesday 17 November at the ANZ Pavilion, Victorian Arts Centre.
Proceeds will go to the women's centre.

The Australian Women's Research Centre at Deakin University is running a Summer Institute from 9 to 29 January. The courses are open to all women with an interest in subjects as varied as psychotherapy and setting up a small business.
The Australian Women's Research Centre was established last year. It educates women and undertakes research involving women's community groups.
